Tshwane Gospel Choir is moving up

THE Tshwane Gospel Choir is continuing to make waves on the local music scene. The 50-member urban African gospel music ensemble will be recording its first live DVD at Unisa's ZK Matthews Great Hall on November 13.

The live concert and DVD recording was endorsed by the City of Tshwane's department of sport, recreation, arts and culture at a media launch recently.

The Tshwane Gospel Choir was founded by Bheki Langa, a Pretoria businessman, who believes in developing young and talented people, particularly from historically disadvantaged backgrounds.

Since its inception in March the choir has performed at the National Day of Prayer for the 2010 Fifa World Soccer Tournament in Tshwane, Nelson Mandela Day in Winterveldt and in churches around townships in Pretoria.

Basil Dube says the choir's marketing and events manager, the choir has successfully created an alternative platform for the development of new talent from historically disadvantaged communities in the Tshwane region.

"We are proud to be recognised for and associated with developing talent in the City of Tshwane," Dube says. "Tshwane has over the past 90 years produced great musicians such as Philip Tabane, Julian Bahula, Mabe Thobejane, Don Laka and Vusi Mahlasela, to name but a few."

The recording will feature Bongi and Collin Damans, who sing in the Choir. The duo have previously worked with gospel greats such as Benjamin Dube, Vuyo Mokoena and Joyous Celebration.

Their recent debut album, Makadunyiswe, won the Best Urban African Gospel category at the 2010 Samas.
