Dana and Mazwai in bid to preserve Biko legacy

Simphiwe Dana and Thandiswa Mazwai are to host an imbizo in Soweto inspired by Steve Biko

STRUGGLE icon Steve Bantu Biko has been a big influence in Simphiwe Dana's life. A few years ago she released the highly-regarded One Love Movement on Bantu Biko Street.

Now on the 33rd anniversary of Biko's death, she and Thandiswa Mazwai, another music icon, are involved in a new black consciousness project called Blackwash.

It was announced yesterday that they would lead a discussion about "the black condition and how we can concretise a collective vision that seeks meaningful change" at an imbizo in Soweto.

The event, to be graced by US professor Lewis Gordon, a prominent philosopher, runs from September 24 to 26.

According to organiser Zandi Radebe, the conference would give "an opportunity to ordinary citizens to take stock of what has happened in the past decade and half".

Participants would "deliberate on what has been done by all South Africans who want justice and sustainable development for the majority".

The organisers feel that "all areas of black life are engulfed in major crises" ranging from poor health care, a lack of education and poverty to racism and landlessness.
