Singer Siphokazi anointed an heir
SINGING sensation Siphokazi has been passed a musical baton by living legend Dorothy Masuka.
Masuka told Siphokazi, pictured, never to stop singing, and that she should remain as grounded and humble as she was.
Siphokazi said yesterday: "I still can't believe that she chose to give the baton to me. I am so humbled and still cry every time I think about it."
The "handover" took place on Sunday at the Tribute to Artistic Women concert hosted by the Department of Arts and Culture at the State Theatre in Pretoria.
"There were so many young and talented artists present but she chose me," Siphokazi said.
The young singer was very happy that Arts and Culture Minister Lulu Xingwana had the vision of uniting women in that fashion.
"It is very rare to find so many artists gathered in celebration of the women of our country, and giving women from all spheres of life an opportunity to share in the celebrations of Women's Month. I hope that an event like this becomes annual," she said.
Siphokazi said music legends had to fight to keep the music alive during apartheid, and that the passing of the baton signified how they are letting young artists continue with the race. She said sharing the stage with divas like Masuka, Thandi Klaasen, Nothembi Mkhwebane and Mara Louw was a dream come true.
