'Make breast-feeding compulsory'

Aug 4, 2010 | Bang Showbiz | 16 comments

Gisele Bundchen thinks a law should be made to make new mothers breastfeed for at least six months.

It's called 'labour', not 'holiday' for a reason

The 30-year-old supermodel – who gave birth to son Benjamin, her first child with husband Tom Brady, in December 2009 – thinks it is wrong for mothers to give formula to their newborns.

She said in an interview with Harper's Bazaar magazine: "Some people think they don't have to breastfeed and I think, 'Are you going to give chemical food to your child when they are so little?'

"I think there should be a worldwide law that mothers should breast-feed their babies for six months."

The Brazilian-born beauty also admitted that "breastfeeding really helped me keep my figure".

Gisele also revealed she prepared by doing yoga before her home birth.

She said: "It prepared me mentally and physically.

"It's called 'labour', not 'holiday' for a reason...

"You want to go into the most intense physical experience of your life unprepared? That doesn't make sense to me. I wasn't expecting someone else to get the baby out of me."

Gisele – who delivered Benjamin in the bathtub at her and Tom's Beacon Hill penthouse, in Boston - doesn't think she is special for opting for a home birth, she just thought it was normal.

She said: "Not for one second did it cross my mind that I was not going to have my baby at home. I'm not the first person to give birth naturally. Billions of other women have come before me and have done this - so why can't I do it?"

I agree Gisele, babies enjoy breast milk so much and parents just make selfish decisions to introduce formula at an early age, i think they should breast feed at a minimum for six months.

do u honestly think that mom's do formula because of selfishness, i don't think so, there are various reasons a mother will decide not to breast feed there kid, (1), HIV positive mother's cannot - if they do then that's selfish (2) 99.99999999999% of mother's work..........now i know u can express and so forth, (3) some babies are not filled with just breast milk, i can go on & on with various reasons, these are not excuses but it's the reality of it.................

considering the infections the baby might be exposed to from breast feeding, i disagree with new baby mothers to even think of feeding the vulnerable baby. why, breast cancer, aids, low nutrition supply, and so on, but i propose that formulas to be used for better growth of the bby and to avoid any dangers or illnesses of the baby.

I would disagree with Gisele, yes breast feeding is good for the child's growth , in the event the mother cant breastfeed there is formula. I battled because my breast was too small and didnt have enough milk so i had to use formula there was nothing selfish about it . Some companies only give 3 months maternity leave , so breastfeeding is not gonna work ........

She is pushing her luck. yes breastfeeding is good for the baby but there are a lot of reasons on why other women do not breastfeed. to ask for it to be a law is pushing it a bit.

Well I suppose if I had her money, I too could have taken 6 months off work. Unfortunately, not many of us can. She also doesn't take into consideration the HIV problem or the poor women who simply can't produce sufficient milk.

Sometimes I wonder why these airhead models think they have any right at all to claim to know anything

Baby can be breatfed after work, my child wouldn't take the formula but i made sure he got the breat milk, so what am saying is that u don't have to be on leave to be able to breastfeed ur child. There are some mothers who won't even consider breastfeeding yes for their own selfish reason.

It is true that most of parents do not breastfeed for the reasons beyond their control, i just want to advice those who does not have reasons, they just decide not to breastfeed that they are denying such young ones their rights to breastfeed.Remember breastfeeding is a most healthy diet for babies and aslo serve as a comfort and attachment to Physically, sychologicaly and otherwise for the child developments.

I beg to differ with all of you, and agree with PrettyLady, babies can be breastfed after work. i have three kids. I got my firstborn still in school and the other two when I was working and where all breastfed.
I have seen many people some are even my colleagues who thinks breastfeeding is oldfashioned and belongs in the generation of our mothers. Yes there are cases where a person has no choice like cases where you have to go and work/study elsewhere far from home or you are sick.
Many thinks giving baby formula is status. They dont know what they are missing or what their chilren are missing. I always feel sorry for the children as some are constantly sick.
