Will DA and EFF form a coalition in Nelson Mandela Bay?

The Democratic Alliance and the Economic Freedom Fighters have at least one thing in common – a refusal to partner with the African National Congress.

EFF national chairperson Dali Mpofu said that the DA could potentially count on the EFF in its efforts to take Nelson Mandela Bay‚ speaking at the IEC's national results operation centre on Thursday.

"We said we'll partner with any party. Any party but the ANC. What we will not do as a matter of principle is to bring the ANC back through the back door‚" he said.

This was after DA leader Mmusi Maimane announced that the DA would take the most votes in Nelson Mandela Bay‚ snatching it away from the ANC.

He said the DA would speak to opposition parties about forming a coalition.

He ruled out partnering with the African National Congress‚ however‚ saying‚ "We've run this election on the basis of change‚ so I'm speaking to other opposition parties".

"It's quite exciting for us. This gives us a great opportunity to set up a government there."

Mpofu seemed unsure of the DA's claim when asked to respond‚ asking‚ "Is that what they said?"

But he said that the EFF would enter into any coalition that would benefit citizens.

"Coalitions will be based on principle. If we can't agree on principle‚ there will be no partnership.

"We will form a coalition with all opposition parties as long as it serves the people. For us it's about the people and the people only. If voters decide a single party should not rule on its own‚ that's what the people want."

Mpofu said that the issues that the party was particularly concerned about in Nelson Mandela Bay relate to the bucket system‚ water and electricity.

Mpofu also took a swipe at what he called the ANC and DA's "neo-liberal" policies.

"The DA and the ANC are the same. If I were them I would form a coalition‚" he said.

DA national spokesperson Phumzile van Damme said that the party's predication of a positive result was established through its polling in Nelson Mandela Bay.

At about 7.50pm the IEC's results board showed that the DA was in the lead in Nelson Mandela Bay with 49.49% of the vote. The ANC held 39.25% and the EFF 4.87%.

Ninety percent of counting had been completed in the metro.
