Democratic Alliance mayoral candidate for Johannesburg Herman Mashaba says former ANC president Nelson Mandela would vote for the DA were he still alive.

Speaking to eNCA ahead of his party's final rally at the Dobsonville stadium in Soweto on Saturday‚ Mashaba said the DA is the only party that represents what the late statesman stood for.

"I personally feel that if Mr Mandela was still alive today the DA would really be the party that he would be voting for because the DA represents what Mandela stood for‚" Mashaba said.

He added: "The 27 years that he [Mandela] spent in jail he fought and all that suffering‚ this is the party that represents him. That is why I voted for him and I feel so proud of having voted for him."

Mashaba together with other DA leaders are attending the party’s final rally at the Soweto stadium which accommodates over 25‚000 people.

The party hopes to win many metros and municipalities at the August 3 local government elections.
