SOWETAN DIALOGUES: The ANC has an opportunity to reverse its declining credibility during its elective conference in Mangaung, says ANC national executive committee member Pallo Jordan.

Jordan was addressing the second session of the Sowetan Dialogues - providing ordinary South Africans with an opportunity and platform to discuss and debate issues affecting their daily lives with top news-makers - at the University of Limpopo' s Turfloop campus last night.

Jordan shared the stage with Sowetan editor Mpumelelo Mkhabela and ANC Youth League deputy president Ronald Lamola.

Jordan said the elective conference in Mangaung, Free State, in December, would give members a chance to make an introspection in terms of leadership choices, and to restore the values and high morals the party had been known for preserving.

"The ANC has always embraced values and ideals as its vision of a shared society," he said.

"It is against this background that we call upon those going to Mangaung to ensure the organisation's credibility is restored."

In a well-timed message to delegates who would be voting in Mangaung, Jordan reminded them that the democratic movement and the political leadership situations were changing.

He added that, during its formative years, the ANC had a responsibility to fight non-racialism and to ensure that all people enjoyed equal opportunities in South Africa.

"The generation of Sisulu (Walter), Tambo (Oliver) and Mandela (Nelson) made sure to keep the values and morals of the organisation intact.

"Those in the leadership have the responsibility to bring back the glory days of the organisation."

Jordan urged the members to elect a leadership "capable" of overcoming all challenges the party was facing, saying the mistakes committed in the past could not be tolerated forever.

Lamola appealed to the current ANC leadership to "listen, absorb and use" the knowledge of people of Jordan's calibre to propel South Africa to the future.

"The organisation must elect into power leaders who are capable of accepting new ideas," he said.
