It is sad that unions point fingers at one another instead of addressing the problem
-----------------------------------------------------------------
it is even more sad when human beings start killing each other for a problem that can be resolved through amicable talks and negotiations.

I saw a clip of miner dwellers on the news yesterdays. Those guys are armed like Inkatha in the early 90's. What suprising the police did not even attempt to disarm them. Where are they getting those weapons.

You could see fire in their eyes calling for a battle. This is beyong salary negotiations, is about the country's stability

I blame NUM, that Siba Leshoka who is NUM president is arrogant and thuggish, same as Irvin Jim. POlice should have shot and killed more, than those 3 thugs that were killed. If they are unhappy about working conditions or salaries, why are they killing those who want to work?? Where is the freedom of speech and movement that is enshrined in the constitution.

These people want to move from R5000.00 that they are currently earning to R12500.00 !!!! Thats crazy. Yes they deserve better salaries, but to jump more than 100% is just unreasonable.

There is a honest fact about Unions in our new democracy in which they have completely lost their relevant core mandate precisely in the Government sector. Labor Institutions which are having a constitutional mandate to protect the workers rights on section 23 (2) (a) and (b) had turned into a party and friendship political battles which hampers the well being of the proper functioning of Unions as employee representative. This is very sad as the poor workers are paying heavy monthly fees for the access to their rights which their representatives are busy fatally violating against their will for personal glory and success. The Parliament should promulgate a legislative demarcation that will separate the Government and Unions so that the Union can be clear from Government duress in favor of begging fat posts, for pure sole representation of their respective employees. There is no need for Cadres to fight for top positions in Unions in order to access keys to personal enrichment by selling the soul and flesh of poor workers who are being used as scapegoats for individual ''penny and gold'' so that the Unionist cadres can position themselves for top political posts for example, Comrade Thulas Nxesi (National Minister of Public Works) and all that jazz!

These incidents indicate a deeply embedded problem. It is easy to manipulate disgruntled people under horrible working conditions and exploitative salaries turn men into animals as brother slays brother.

??? what the hell does that have to do with the price of pork in Palestine ???
Poverty is NOT an excuse to burn people to death or take a panga to a policeman and a salary is negotiated by these very unions so don't now try and make this an 'ag shame poor miners' story. It is about unions acting like Al Capone.

I was shocked yesterday when a union (NUM) spokesman said " You do not negotiate when you're attacked in your own house". That's a mine property belonging to an Employer (LONMIN) and workers can choose a union of their choice without fear of being killed by members of a competitor. For instance, I am in ICT industry - a CWU member and when a splinter group formed another union at the work place (ITCU) we did not have a problem with rival members. As I speak CWU is fighting deregistration with Labour Department. All in all NUM and their competitor must take responsibility as workers are fighting each other and dying. The focus should be about improving workers' lives...

At play here is the fight for the control of resources. With the mining sector having large numbers of unionised employees, the incumbent unions want to preserve their position while new ones want a share.

The unfortunate result is that the poor miners' issues get neglected as the union bosses fight over this juicy bone. The miners are caught up (are used) in the furtherance of this greed.

This picture, unfortunately is not different from our once loved political party and government's. A very state of affairs indeed.
