Mopedi, the problem is not the age, but people who are doing the circumcision. Limpopo & Mpumalanga have the youngest initiates, but they still don't die.xhosa's and Sotho's go to the schools when they are above 18 years, but they still die.
I still maintain my point that people must go and do this thing in hospital. I mean, in hospital, there is doctors, medication and everything. How exactly does it makes you a man to cut in a bush as compared to cutting in hospital?

But people, who still sends their children to the mountains in 2012 ?
Get real the custom is long killed by the crooked and greedy.
The problem with the initiation schools nowadays is that they are commercialised and no longer serving the purpose its suppose to serve which is to circumcise boys and teach them some manners and respect not manhood as its proclaimed. In Limpopo in a certain area there were 754 initiates who all came back alive and healthy the reason being the owner of the school did it for more than twenty years and he doesnt take any chances, his school is governed by laws. There were no under 12 year old boys there, twice a week doctors were going there to check the initiates and no boy was circumsised without his parents s concerned if the boy went there without the parents approval. Eastern cape fly by night initiayion schools and those in other provincesmust be shut down completely and owners be prosecuted Report Abuse

As you don't have to go to a initiation camp to become a man, people dying in vehicle accidents is not small kids going to cave man camps being murdered by elders.

These are 'raw' kids who look like 8 and 9 years old are going for initiation for what exactly? This is pure madness especially from parent's side. The Government of the Republic can now do these things at public clinis for absolutely free. So why do the parents tautcher their own flesh and blood because these kids' "kick and bhoboza" are not even fully developed. Report Abuse
A lot of those kids are there without their parents' permission. The 'new culture' seems to allow some idiot to abduct a child, take them to the mountains and then demand payment before letting them go again.
The culture itself is not wrong. The problem is that those who are in charge of keeping the culture pure are not doing so. We pay eye-watering amounts of taxpayers money to various 'tribal leaders', 'tribal councils', 'traditional leaders', 'traditional leader councils' and even have a government department for this. As a young boy about to reach manhood (around 17 years) you tell your parents you're ready and amadoda (men) will have a gathering to decide when, who will carry out the process and who is going to be ikhankatha (caretaker) to look after the boys while away. I am also from EC and I have been following this with curiosity because I take pride in my culture. My father, brothers, uncles and my friend have been to initiation school and came back alive. Initially AmaMpondo did not practise this before and now their boys want to because of the pressure that they get from their peers. The are loads of people in the EC who come back alive from the mountain and my son one day will go and come back alive. I am tired bias reporting, we only read about only the bad. They should also report the success stories and the good about our cultures. There are measures in place from the EC government to deal with the situation but we do not hear about that. Report Abuse

Initiation remains of the most painful "self inflicted” torture anyone can ever go through. Had I known what they were doing there, I dont think I would hv gone, I would hv most probably gone to Jozi or KZN lol. Nothing can ever prepare you for that. U are made to believe you have a choice, in terms of doing it or not, bt in actual fact you dont. Society dictates that you should do it, to fit in and be a proper man. With all that said it has shaped my life for the better. When you are a "man" you are expected to act in a certain way, respect yourself, parents and society, never act in a manner that will shame your family. I think I have done well in this regard. The single significant thing abt initiation is that it taught me there are days and times in life where u just cant see the light at the end of the tunnel, you learn that with perseverance, dedication and the will to never give up all is possible, Same as initiation there are days when you would look at your manhood, and you would think, this thing can never work again, it will nevrr heal. Gradually in time it gets better the pain slowly fades away, u can get it up lo. I have a problem with articles like this, they shoot down Initiation and yet they dont offer any solutions. There is nothing wrong with the tradition of initiation its still the same that was done many decades ago, something gets chopped and in time it should heal. The people who are practising the tradition are messing it up, not taking into consideration the impact of HIV, circumcision of kids, inexperience of the doctors who are supposed to take care of the initiates, rough treatment of the initiates, unqualified surgeons etc. The solution is not to get rid of the tradition instead what could work is for the goverment to have registered school and registered surgeons, doctors etc. Where would b initiates can walk in hv everything done, till they have healed. After that they go home, All of this must happen in the mountains of coz not some stupid hospital. Report Abuse

The NGO's that rush to courts because of a Malema song, farm murders, books thrown into the river, HRV's not supplied, should by now be banging the doors to Mogoeng Mogoeng's court over the violation of a right to life of these children. That is all the bitch is about. Stop culling our children.
Can females be circumcised too - for womanhood?

The problem with the initiation schools nowadays is that they are commercialised and no longer serving the purpose its suppose to serve which is to circumcise boys and teach them some manners and respect not manhood as its proclaimed. In Limpopo in a certain area there were 754 initiates who all came back alive and healthy the reason being the owner of the school did it for more than twenty years and he doesnt take any chances, his school is governed by laws. There were no under 12 year old boys there, twice a week doctors were going there to check the initiates and no boy was circumsised without his parents s concerned if the boy went there without the parents approval. Eastern cape fly by night initiayion schools and those in other provincesmust be shut down completely and owners be prosecutedReport Abuse

Talk about reasoning capacity, trying to compare a drive in a car with an cave man camp. You don't have to get into a vehicle to "become a man" as your ancient culture describes it.
As you don't have to go to a initiation camp to become a man, people dying in vehicle accidents is not small kids going to cave man camps being murdered by elders.

That's how it works and there are no fly by night initiation schools that way. T

After that they go home, All of this must happen in the mountains of coz not some stupid hospital.Report Abuse

tpazCan females be circumcised too - for womanhood?
In the case of "women" circumcision...most refer to it as mutilation.
Removing the clitoris is far from a norm - that's basically cutting and removing a women's womanhood!

Yep, Black Africans will continue to perish economically & socially all in the name of culture. Life Black people was never meant to be static, without responsible adaptation stagnation & death in one form or another is guaranteed. Continue justifying everything in the name of culture & you can be rest assured that we will remain laggards to all the nations of the world. Innovation is the ultimate weapon for survival: be it in business, health or social sphere. By the way I'm Black to dispel any suspicions.Report Abuse

People think there is a campaign against getting males circumcised. There is not. There is a campaign against children being killed in the carrying out of a ritual/custom etc.If 42 children die in a year in pursuit of anything we should be charged withirresponsibility. All. The NGO's that rush to courts because of a Malema song, farm murders, books thrown into the river, HRV's not supplied, should by now be banging the doors to Mogoeng Mogoeng's court over the violation of a right to life of these children. That is all the bitch is about. Stop culling our children.
No one is opposed to your custom/ritual

Can females be circumcised too - for womanhood?
................................................................................................
Soil called ibovu. Some of the women in KZN use this thing on their faces as a sun block cream.
Women can be circumcised. Actually, they do it in other countries, the cutting of a clit.

im realliy glad to be living with elders who know and understand the life threatning dangers of such initiations, because now in some cultures it seems like the elders there are still vividily naive and mindlocked in understanding the great danger these initiations are...Report Abuse

All you people who think only the circumcised are "real men". Do you realise that most men in the world are not circumcised? Is Daniel Craig not a real man? Or the vast majority of the sportsmen at the Olympics from Europe, Scandinavia, China, South and Central America? Or all of the top football teams? Are they all just "boys" for you to despise?Report Abuse
