A sad scenario

Jun 26, 2012 | Sowetan Editorial | 1 comments

DURING a TV interview, Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga told how she continued to agonise over the education crisis in Limpopo.

IN HOT WATER: Minister Angie Motshekga.

Motshekga went on to assure the public that all pupils will receive their textbooks by tomorrow. Unfortunately, her outpourings will still be taken with a pinch of salt given her department's dismal performance when it comes to ensuring the thousands of Limpopo pupils enjoy one of the basic rights entrenched in our Constitution - the right to education.

Yesterday, Sadtu threw the spanner into already desperate situation. The teacher union says its members must be paid if they are to put in extra work - as part of the department's catch-up programme.

Morally, we cannot agree with such a call. But we agree with Sadtu that the situation in Limpopo is due to poor administration. Whether the textbooks are delivered, our children will continue to be fed a poor quality education.

This minister is arrogant and down right disrespectful to the people and most of all the children who will one day be the youth and then adults.

Angie should resign, this is an example of our ministers behaviour. She is rude, uncaring as a mother and tells the nation without doubt in her mind that she is not going to resign as there is no crisis.

Today the 28/06/2012 so schools still do have the books.

Does Minister Angie Motshekga have a conscience? History will judge her harshly one day.
