Bamboozled

IF YOU thought John Gcabashe, the fraudster claiming to be late maskandi artist Mgqumeni, was the most ridiculous person on earth, think again.

As we report today, a "prophet" has emerged claiming to have seen heaven - and God!

And what did people do on hearing the Gospel according to Sibusiso Mthembu? They flocked in numbers to his house, wanting to see this "man of God".

He is even reported to be drawing a map of heaven. Really?

What are we to make of this phenomenon of imposters?

It emerged in court last week that "Fake Mgqumeni" is a former convict with rape charges hanging over his head. While we wait for the court's finding on Mgqumeni's impersonation charges, it is worth asking what makes people believe in myths. That some travelled from faraway places to see a fake is worrying.

Why are we allowing fakes to dupe us?
