All aboard the transformation train

UNITED Nations (UN) Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon labelled sport "a world language, a common denominator that breaks down all the walls, all the barriers" in his address to the International Forum on Sport, Peace and Development at the UN headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland on May 11.

"It is a worldwide industry whose practices can have a widespread impact. Most of all, it is a powerful tool for progress and development," he continued.

"Sport has become a world language, a common denominator that breaks down all the walls, all the barriers. It is a worldwide industry whose practices can have a widespread impact. Most of all, it is a powerful tool for progress and development."

As we prepare for the national Sport and Recreation Indaba at the end of this month the Ministry of Sport and Recreation is engaged in a campaign to consult and engage with as many stakeholders as possible in discussions about the transformation perspective, transformation charter and a tailored sport and recreation plan.

The ministry has already convened a media and editors consultation forum as a platform to consult broadly with media houses and organisations on the issue of transformation.

Going forward, the ministry is also preparing a plethora of consultation forums and assemblies to consolidate engagement on the pertinent transformation topics in sport and recreation. In this regard, the ministry has lined up consultations with the public entities in the likes of Boxing South Africa (BSA), the South African Institute for Drug-Free Sport (Saids), the National Lottery Board and National Lottery Distribution Agency.

At the same time the ministry will be hosting a cocktail dinner with sports veterans and outstanding sports personalities, especially the former National Sport Council members and major sportspersons in the country.

As part of this consultation journey we will be hosting the business sector consultation forum on Friday for the same purpose and on Saturday will consult broadly with civil society at the Wanderers Golf Club in Johannesburg.

These stakeholder engagements will be preceded by a special consultation between Sport and Recreation South Africa, the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee and all the MECs who are responsible for sport and recreation in their respective provinces.

When Nelson Mandela stepped back into the world, a major and irreversible transformation movement was triggered in South Africa. South Africans are not alone in coming to terms with the realities of having to adapt to the rapidly changing environment within which they function.

The country has been firmly launched on a journey of transforming and reinventing itself through the exigent process of establishing new structures, a new culture and new value sets.

We therefore call on all South Africans to get on the train to the national Sport and Recreation Indaba.

Thank you.

  • Mbalula is the Minister of Sport and Recreation
