It would be fun to get a peep of local celebrities' libraries
I WAS pleasantly surprised to learn the other day that Miss South Africa, Bokang Montjane, facilitated the donation of a library to her old school, Kgaganoko Primary in Ga-Mphahlele, Limpopo.
When I heard this she was not close enough for me to give her a peck on the cheek. Way to go, girl!
Note: A library for a school, not a house music festival.
Another high-profile personality who is a woman after my own heart is Afro-soul sensation Simphiwe Dana. She said on a social network site that she'd recently bought a stack of books, among which, if I remember correctly, was Ben Okri and other cerebral writers.
I know for a fact that the Biko Street artist is no fluke; she's always been bookish, having embarked on campaigns to collect books for the underprivileged.
But I would love to be the fly that goes to every room in the homes of our celebrities, à la the MTV Cribs show. I want to see their home libraries and studies, should our local celebrities have these in their pads. I might have been dozing in front the telly each time Cribs came on, but I have never seen a home with a well-stocked library in any of the homes featured so far.
Why?
Yes, their cars and electronic gadgets are beautiful and impressive, but don't people read?
I am salivating over an Internet clip showing the homes of "20 celebrities with stunning home libraries".
Any committed bibliophile fantasises about having the ultimate home library. Whether that's a room filled floor to ceiling with every book they've ever wanted to read or a simple, cosy den stocked with priceless antique tomes is really a matter of taste.
Regardless of style, most are limited from fulfilling these dreams of a home library haven thanks to budget constraints.
Celebrities, often making tens of thousands of rands for just showing up somewhere, have no such financial restraints and may indulge themselves with those epic home libraries the rest of us can only dream about.
"Here are several libraries of the rich and famous sure to fill you with envy and awe - maybe even motivate you to create a more budget-friendly version in your own home."
What follows after this is an amazing array of books in homes to leave you green with envy if you're a book lover.
King of fashion Karl Lagerfeld's home is featured first. Impressive does not do justice to the space he's created for his books.
"Reaching from floor to the very high ceilings in his Paris apartment, Lagerfeld's collection comprises more than 60000 volumes, making it one of the largest private libraries in the world.
"Unsurprisingly, many of the works are about fashion and steel shelves, which are a must to hold the heavy, picture-laden volumes prized by the Chanel designer.
"Another fashion icon, Ralph Lauren, is featured in the clip. So is Oprah Winfrey, who we know for discussing books on her monumental TV show.
Old rocker Keith Richards, when he's not strumming his guitar, has time for books.
Even Whacko Jacko, the late Michael Jackson, had amassed no less than 10000 books.
Rod Stewart, Diane Keaton and Sting are among those bibliophiles with sumptuous book spaces.
Surely, everything our own celebrities can show us cannot only be their designer phones and jeans.
