Let's do it the Mandela way

Jul 8, 2011 | Reader letter - Malphia Honwane | 60 comments

WE South Africans are very blessed to have a person of the calibre of Madiba as our compatriot.

As South Africans, we should behave in a Madiba way, meaning that it is our duty not to misbehave, not to commit crime, not to hold grudges nor to do harm to other people

This is the man who sacrificed his life to fight all forms of oppression and inequality that used to engulf our belovedcountry.

Madiba ensured an end to both the racial and ethnic intolerance that existed among the citizens of South Africa.

We are a democratic country today because of him. July is known as Mandela Month and it is celebrated worldwide in honour of this icon.

My question is: what are you doing as a South African?

How much impact are you making on someone else's life, let alone on our society?

Let's bear in mind that our conduct is a reflection of the country of Madiba's birth.

Surely we cannot fail to put all our bad habits on hold for once. By doing this, it might subsequently lead to a total abandonment of bad habits and we might behave in a way that will add dignity to our first democraticpresident, a dignity greater than Madiba has now.

As South Africans, we should behave in a Madiba way, meaning that it is our duty not to misbehave, not to commit crime, not to hold grudges nor to do harm to other people.

Let's honour this hero, who is world-renowned, by conducting ourselves in a responsible manner, by helping those people in need and changing someone else's life for the better.

By doing this, we will be able to call ourselves the true compatriots of Madiba.

In a month when the eyes of people of the world will be on us and on our country, we cannot afford to do anything wrong.

The ball is now in our court and, yes, we can do better.
