Thanks, Kolie

MIRIAM Makeba, the legendary late Mama Africa, could have come and left this world unnoticed. Then she was discovered by the Manhattan Brothers and the memorable musical King Kong

The world took note since her music delighted all and sundry.

When the versatile Makeba passed on last year there was ululation for her the world over.

Joe "Kolie" Mogotsi, 87, had unearthed and nurtured a gem.

Yesterday the pioneer South African singer-songwriter died in London.

We think it fitting to invoke the Makeba name to highlight the influence Mogotsi and the Manhattan Brothers had on SA music.

Mogotsi and the group, formed in the 1930s, left with King Kong in 1961 and never returned because of apartheid.

Through their music the world would be reminded of apartheid and still revel in the voice of the oppressed. Thank you, Kolie.
