Ticket for a ride on the gravy train

GULUVA was extremely distraught to learn that one of the Machine Gun Man's future daughters-in-law earns a living by driving trains for state-owned entity Transnet.

Phulele Shange will towards the end of this year tie the matrimonial knot with 34-year-old Edward Zuma, a highly successful businessman with shares in numerous companies.

Not that train driving is a bad career; not at all. It's just that it does not seem right for the president's future in-law to, if you like, pull so hard while the family is swimming in opulence and enjoying the fruits of the presidency he fought so hard for.

Well, it might be that the 31-year-old Shange and her fiancé have not yet heard of the Guptas.

Metrorail off track

Still on the issue of trains, hardly a day passes in Mzansi without a complaint being lodged about suburban rail commuter service Metrorail.

The trains arrive late, if at all, putting the jobs of millions of struggling poor people in jeopardy.

Metrorail has been associated with everything that has failure written on it. The carriages are filthy, windows are broken and heaters hardly ever function, especially in winter. Safety is another sticking point that train commuters have to grapple with on their way home every night.

No wonder some fed-up commuters refer to Metrorail as Metrofail.

The cost of stupidity

Have you ever wondered how much officialdom's bungling costs Mzansi's taxpayers and the poor?

Last week, in desperation to justify their controversial replacement of the Scorpions, the Hawks went hammer and tong at Czech fugitive and alleged underworld king Radovan Krejcir.

But in their stupidity and ignorance, they raided the wrong property, using an armoured vehicle to break down the gate and stormed into the house where they ransacked every room, breaking cupboards and other furniture as they went along.

After about 40 minutes they realised they had swooped on the wrong house. By the time they repeated the onslaught next door, it was too late.

Speaking as if the Hawks were awash with money, spokesperson McIntosh Polela glibly said the unit would not have a problem paying for the damage, estimated at R300000.

For this amount, the government can build no fewer than 10 RDP houses. This means another long wait for 10 poor and struggling families.

Talk about service delivery.

Kiss of death?

Guluva has a confession to make: he had not until now seen a white chick openly kissing a black dude in Mzansi, not even in the local soapies.

That is why he watched in complete disbelief live TV footage showing Godzille planting a neat, clean one on one of her black officials at the launch of the party's local government election manifesto in Kliptown.

With race relations still somewhat fluid, Saturday's scene could see Godzille kissing her party's traditional - and largest - support base goodbye.
