Entrepreneur Themba Dlamini always dreamed of opening his own business.

His dream became a reality when he dropped out of university while studying fashion due to financial constraints.

Born in Soweto, he says after dropping out he was forced to work for different corporate companies.

After few years in the private sector, the 36-year-old decided to establish Obafemi Concepts. His company belongs to the group of small business enterprises that are empowering the youth. Obafemi Concepts started out specialising in printing unique T-shirts, sweaters and hoodies.

"We started out printing these nice T-shirts with messages from Bible scriptures. We realised that there was a huge interest from people," Dlamini said.

After a year, Obafemi Concepts extended the focus to other areas including lifestyle, food, events and catering for private functions. Dlamini said their mission is to help people live a balanced life.

"Our focus at the moment is on the body, but there's more that's going to come that will focus on the spirit and soul."

Under the lifestyle segment, the company looks at the wellness of people and image consulting. They also share tips on good health.

"Sometimes people want to change their wardrobe, this is where we come in. We first look at your profession and understand your favourite colours.

"Sometimes people want to change their diet. We send a personal trainer with your diet requirements. You can exercise in your own space and when you [are] available to do that."

Dlamini said one of the challenges was getting more clients. As part of his mission to promote good lifestyle in the townships, Dlamini has opened an Obafemi Nail & Massage Bar in Kwadwesi, Port Elizabeth.

The massage bar has employed three (permanent) people, thus contributing to the economy of the province. He said the challenges they have experienced so far were operational. "One of the challenges was to launch ourselves. But we decided to host a private event and invited possible clients to show them what we do.

"In that way, we were able to demonstrate to them. We had to spend our own money just to convince them. From then people started contacting us."

Dlamini said so far, the company only depends on social network and their website to market themselves. Obafemi Concepts also has a range of new clothing collection.
