The woman accused of defrauding MTN of R24-million could lose her three properties valued at almost R2-million, two luxury vehicles and salary drawn from directorship positions she holds at 10 companies.

Branden Ruth Moshabane, 43, a single mother from Brakpan on Johannesburg's East Rand who is MTN's accountant, is facing theft and fraud charges after the Hawks arrested her two weeks ago.

She is due for a bail application at the Johannesburg Specialised Commercial Crimes Court this week. State prosecutor Bongani Chauke said in court he wouldoppose bail at the hearing which was twice postponed last week.

Should the state succeed in the case, Moshabane could have her assets, including bank accounts, attached.

National Prosecuting Authority spokesman Luvuyo Mfaku said the asset forfeiture unit (AFU) would usually conduct the seizure of a defendant's assets.

He said the AFU would determine if the accused used any of the alleged stolen money to fund current assets.

"If there is a positive link then the state will apply for the preservation order to freeze all the assets until the completion of the trial," Mfaku said.

It is alleged that Moshabane fraudulently transferred money from the MTN bank account into her personal account between July 2015 and April 2017. Standard Bank contacted MTN after noticing strange transactions made into Moshabane's account.

Sowetan has seen records showing that she previously held directorship positions at 14 companies and has since resigned from four.

She also owns three properties with a total value of R1.7million. The properties were, however, bought before the period she allegedly defrauded MTN.

But the state has identified two more homes that she registered in other people's names. She also owns two vehicles, a Jeep Grand Cherokee and a Toyota Hilux Raider. At the time of her arrest she had been staying at the posh Helderwyk Estate house which she bought for R910000 in 2013.

Moshabane had informed the state that she worked for MTN for 13 years, but her records show otherwise.

"MTN is working with law enforcement authorities and its banking partners to recover the stolen funds.

"MTN cannot disclose further details about this matter as this may jeopardise the ongoing investigation," said Ike Dube of MTN.
